We are excited to officially launch our events for Refugee Week 2021.  Refugee Week runs from 14th-20th  June and the theme for 2021 “We Cannot Walk Alone”.  Refugee Week is a UK-wide festival of arts, cultural and educational events celebrating the contribution of refugees and promoting understanding as to why people seek sanctuary.



Refugee Week Launch: Opening event

 The Refugee Week 2021 theme this year is ‘We Cannot Walk Alone’ inspired by Martin Luther King’s historical “I have a dream” speech. He said: “They have come to realise that their freedom is inextricably bound to our freedom. We cannot walk alone.”

 In this launch event, guests will talk about what sanctuary means to them. They will explore how their organisations are embracing togetherness and walking side by side with sanctuary seekers.

The Actors for Human Rights programme was founded in 2006 and is a network of more than 700 actors across the UK who are dedicated to drawing public attention to human rights concerns. Ice & Fire explores human rights stories through performance. They put human rights at the core of everything they do to make accessible theatre for a wide range of audiences across the UK.

Using documentary theatre, Asylum Monologues interweaves first-hand accounts of the UK’s asylum system with chilling details. The performance explores the effects on those experiencing the hostile environments when seeking sanctuary in the UK.

Preston City of Sanctuary are distributing the renowned children’s book, ‘The Boy at the Back of the Class’ to various primary schools in Preston. Children will hear the story of Ahmet, a refugee boy from Syria who comes to their school.

After hearing the story, children will be encouraged to reflect on their thoughts and feelings about Ahmet and other refugee children.


We Can Walk Together – Outdoor event

Time: 1.00-5.30 PM                                                                                                                                                        Location: Groups will meet at various points across Preston city (see maps below) and walk s towards Avenham Park to gather for fun activities and the sharing of food.
